Employer Connection

Dear Sponsor,

By 2025, one in five jobs will be in the trades. At the same time, a third of our tradespeople are preparing to retire and the average age of an apprentice is 29 years old.
To address this looming labour shortage and build the projects our communities need, the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development is calling on industry partners to train the next generation of skilled tradespeople, and help form a talented, resilient, and vibrant workforce.
As a sponsor, you are a critical partner in our mission to unleash the unrivalled potential of young women and men early on in their lives so that they can find a career they wouldn’t trade.

Help students gain real-world work experience to meet the needs of our growing economy by participating in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)!

What is OYAP?

OYAP offers high school students the opportunity to explore a skilled trade through on-site learning that contributes to the completion of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. There are more than 72 OYAP recruiters , working in school boards across Ontario, who can help connect you with eager students who want to learn by doing.

There are many benefits to participating:

  • Assess and recruit a potential employee on a trial basis before committing to registering them as an apprentice.
  • Develop supervisory and leadership skills for your staff.
  • Increase the awareness and profile of your organization within your community.

For more information on OYAP and how you can make a difference, please see attached brochure or visit: www.oyapskilledtrades.ca or www.oyap.com

If you would like to speak with someone for additional information, contact your local school board’s OYAP recruiter by clicking here.

Thank you for considering how you can help provide young people with an opportunity to work in the skilled trades!

Sincerely,
Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development
